Nightmarish Photoshop

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

Ran into this surfing yesterday on Boing Boing. Check out the contest. My favorites are “she comes to me”, “Mom’s Worst Nightmare” and “Bloody Girl”. I can’t honestly say that any of them actually frighten me but if I had to pick one it would have to be Bloody Girl. Something about psycho little girls gets to me. I think it’s from watching The Shining by myself as a kid, in an old two-story house in the Matthews, NC country side. Those two little girls scared the hell* out of me, I wanted to stop watching but I was to afraid to leave the couch so I sat there with those images burning into my retinas. I’m lucky the boy’s name was Danny, whose knows what would have happened if they said “Come and play with us Alex”. It took years before I would watch the movie again. It’s kind of funny actually, I’m 6′3″ and weigh about 190lbs so there is no logical threat posed at all by a psychotic little girl. I guess if it gets you while you’re young….

Also check out some of the other contests on Worth1000, there are some talented people out there.

Mind fuckingly good books

Friday, August 27th, 2004

I found this list surfing the web a while back. It looks pretty good, there are a few books I can think of that should be on there but with lists like these you can never please everybody. I have already read twenty-one books on the list and I own an additional eight of them, I just haven’t gotten around to reading them yet. I thoroughly enjoyed the ones I’ve read so far, so I’m looking forward to more. Checkout the main site the list is on too, it’s pretty cool.

Touchin’ the sun

,

Last Friday I saw Suntoucher at Apache Cafe. They are a dub band based here in Atlanta. This is the first time I’ve been to Apache Cafe, it was pretty cool and I enjoyed the crowd. Of course it was a reggae crowd so it might be different vibe on other nights. The other band scheduled didn’t show up so they played two sets. In the second set a DJ that was there freesytled over the music and was very good at it. I don’t recall his name though. One of the band members would switch from trumpet to guitar depending on the song, he manned an iBook as well. He was very talented especially with the trumpet. I like dubconscious better (who I’m seeing tonight) but I would see them again.

The Power of Fundamentalism

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

I was listening to “The Power of Fundamentalism” yesterday on Speaking of Faith. I was only able to catch the Islam portion and half of the Christian segment (was invited to dinner by my neighbor). I plan on listening to the rest tonight, just hearing the first segment is enough to recommend it though. I have long felt we should be trying to understand where this hatred is coming from instead of just trying to destroy it (which will never happen). I think people on all sides would benefit from seeing the others point of view. Of course this is nothing new, we are told this constantly throughout our lives but most people (including myself) never seem to put it into practice when it is most needed.

Spam is actually a good thing

Sunday, August 22nd, 2004

I saw the Spam Allstars last night at the Masquerade. It was completely unplanned, I wanted to see Sonic Youth but they were sold out. I’m glad I caught the Allstars though, they’re a very cool band with an interesting combination of DJ, live instruments and break dancers. I highly recommend them. I picked up ¡fuacata! live, didn’t have enough cash to pickup their latest CD. I wish I brought more though, they were selling their CDs cheaper than Amazon. The CD case is pretty cool, it’s three sections of cardboard that fold together, with a rubber CD holder. So there was no pain in the ass sticker to peel off and the shrink wrap was easy to open. So again if you have a chance to see them check ‘em out, you won’t be disappointed. Peace

Music, movies, plants and litter

Friday, August 20th, 2004

I was out sick on Wednesday, the past couple of weeks I have had a really hard time getting up in the morning. Not just tired but exhausted like I was coming off a week long cocaine binge or had way to many shots the night before. I was almost ready to go to the doctor (a big step for me) but I believe I have found the cause. A while back I inadvertently killed three of my bromeliads. Every so often I will leave them out side during the day, this particular time I left them out for two or three days and ended up killing them. I threw two of them out almost immediately but not the third for some reason. Since I was off yesterday (plus Urban Gardener has 25% off plants in August on Wednesdays) and felt better around lunch time I decided to buy some new plants. I picked up three new bromeliads (notice a trend) and took them home. I decided to throw out the remaining dead plant and I noticed a bunch of mold growing on it. So I threw it out and ran my HEPA filter all day which I haven’t done in a while. The next morning I felt much better (even though I had a few beers the previous night) so I believe this was the cause of my exhaustion. Of course it could all be in my head but I’ve felt fine ever since and I’m sure it wasn’t good for me regardless. I also picked up some CDs that day, the new Steel Pulse “African Holocaust”, “Zen Arcade” by Hüsker Dü and “Together We’re Heavy” by The Polyphonic Spree. I listened to Steel Pulse first and all I can say is wow mon! This CD rocks! Definitely a good buy if you’re into reggae. Zen Arcade is also a great CD considered a punk classic, I am just now getting into music that was good when I was a kid. At the time I was mostly listening to crap ala Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi, etc. I picked up “Together We’re Heavy” because The Polyphonic Spree has been getting a lot of buzz lately and I’ve liked what I’ve heard of them. I missed a free show at Criminal Records a while back but I am going to see them at the Voodoo Music Festival in October. I like the CD, good mellow happy music, it won’t go down as one of my all time favorites but I’m glad I bought it. As I was coming back from my errands I saw some woman toss an empty soda can out of her car at a red light. Man, I wanted to yank her out of her car and smash her face into the concrete (is that extreme), What is wrong with people, I wonder what was going through her head when she did that.

Later on that evening I went to Wednesday WindDown at Centennial Olympic Park to see Delta Moon and King Johnson. When I got there however the EWP Family Band was playing. They weren’t on the WindDown website so maybe there was a cancellation. They were ok, sort of a R&B, jazz, gospel mixture. They played the Dukes of Hazard themesong which was pretty funny. After the show I say The Village with some friends. It was ok but pretty boring. I wish I saw something else instead. Bryce Dallas Howard is HOT though! She can act too, I bet she’ll go far. Well that’s all for Wednesday, till next time.

Right into the Danger Zone

Tuesday, August 17th, 2004

Lately I’ve been playing a lot of Desert Combat a mod for Battlefield 1942. I have some friends who like to fly helicopters a lot and you’re pretty much dead meat if you’re on the ground, unless you get lucky with a stinger (which isn’t very often for me). To combat this problem I need a joystick so I can fly jets and helicopters myself. The problem is, I’ve been using a laptop because my house doesn’t have grounded outlets. I have an old CH Flightstick Pro from my CompUSA days but my laptop doesn’t have a game port (big surprise). So today I did a Google search for a USB to Game Port adapter. Low and behold RadioShack makes one. So I picked it up and everything works great except for the POV hat, guess you can’t have everything. Plus $17 is a whole lot cheaper than $100+ for a new USB joystick. Time to kick some helicopter ass!
