The Story of B

Wednesday, September 29th, 2004

Wow, where do I start? I believe this book could be the beginning of a paradigm shift. I am still trying to wrap my mind around all the concepts and implications that the author puts forth. It is a fundamental change (at least for me) on looking at and trying to resolve the current state of the world. Lately I have been studying Buddhism thinking that might be the solution to the current state of affairs, or a least a solution for me. However this book along with Ishmael has made me reconsider that line of thinking. I really can’t give you an adequate synopsis without practically writing a book myself so I’ll give you this statement provided by the author.

The world will not be saved by old minds with new programs. If the world is saved, it will be saved by new minds—with no programs.

Here’s something else to whet your appetite. This book will teach you how to be an Antichrist. That got your attention huh? Not in the way you probably think though (no I’m not a Satan worshiper) you’ll have to read to book to find out what I mean.

I cannot recommend this highly book enough. It is very entertaining and mind blowing.

It is basically a continuation or elaboration of Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit, which I recommend reading first. It gives you a quick introduction to a lot of the concepts talked about in this book. You could get by with just reading B however and if you only have time to read one I would recommend B.

Flashback

Wednesday, September 29th, 2004

I had yesterday off, so I went down to the Village for lunch and to pickup some dog food. On the way to Australian Bakery I was looking at this Chihuahua statue in the window of a clothing shop. As I walked passed it’s head turned to track me, needless to say I was startled and it took a millisecond or so to realize that it was a live dog. During that time though I was starting to freak out. I’m I having an acid flashback, is there a gas leak at my house, is this some new techno creation from Japan? After the millisecond passed all was well and I’m smiled at the dog who promptly started barking at me. Go figure.

Tampa trip review

Friday, September 24th, 2004

Shit, my flight to Des Moines is on a Delta Connection jet. It’s hard enough to squeeze in the seat on the bigger planes, this is going to be fun. I did get an exit row seat though, unfortunately since the plane is so small I’ll probably have someone sitting next to me. Anyway I have an hour and a half to kill so I figured I would write a review of my Tampa trip before I completely forget what happened.

I was there from September 9th through the 13th. I’ve been to Tampa three times before. A couple of them were like one or two day trips though. This trip was purely a personal one. I went to visit my friends Brian, Lori and Brian. I was also hoping to see my friend Steve his new wife Summer and daughter Reba. Unfortunately it didn’t workout this time. I know I’ll be going back though, especially since Brian’s getting a pool and hot tub put in. (I mean to visit my friends again of course.)

Brian picked me up at the airport and after playing musical cars we headed to Hooters for a beer and wings. I never go to Hooters except when I’m out of town hanging out with friends. I don’t really like their food and I have an ex-psycho girlfriend that used to work there (before I dated her) so it brings back bad memories. The wings were actually good this time though although not hot at all. Plus they had Bass on tap so of course we had to get a pitcher. I think we just hung around the house the rest of that night. Hey give me a break it was two weeks ago, my brain can only hold so much. Isn’t weird how you remember some things and not others? In this instance for example I can’t really remember what we did that night but I remember things from years ago on “non events” from work at the beginning of the year. Of course the beer I drank that night is probably playing a role in this case.

On Saturday we hung out around the house, played some games and Brian changed the wheels on his car. He was showed me Doom3 one night. That is one scary game! Play it at night with all the lights turned off and try not to jump. I used to be a total Doom junkie when the first one came out in ‘93 or ‘94 I believe. I was in Charlotte at the time and some friends and I would have LAN parties before anyone new what a LAN party was. I remember getting hassled by a cop at least once for having a computer in my back seat after getting pulled over for speeding. One of my friends broke his desk by jerking his knee after getting scared by the game.

Back to the trip, that night we went to see Deborah Coleman at WMNF’s 10th birthday party. I’ve seen Deborah twice before, once at The Blind Willie McTell Blues Festival and once at a defunct blues club in Old Towne Conyers. Deborah is a real treat to see, she really shreds on the guitar. Not some girly guitar either she uses a full-size Les Paul with a fat neck. She is hands down the best female guitarist I have ever seen, and better than 98% of the men I’ve seen. We showed up a little late so we only got to hear about four songs. I would’ve went if she was only playing one song though. Dave Alvin was headlining, that was a buzzkill after hearing Deborah so we left after giving him a chance by suffering through a couple of songs. This actually worked out great because I was originally going to see Deborah at The Harvest Moon Bluesfest which I’m going to miss now since I decided to go to the Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans during that same weekend. After the show we stopped at a bar closed it went back to the house and stayed up to some ungodly hour.

On Saturday we went to Siesta Key Beach which was about 45 minutes away from their house. Siesta Key is a beautiful beach with white sand the consistency of powdered sugar. I had a great time that day.

I must interrupt this blog for a minute. There is a young couple sitting next to me at the gate bench. I guess the guy isn’t not feeling well because he is sitting on the ground in front of the girl. Earlier she was massaging his head but a minute ago she was touching his head in a petting motion. Out of the corner of my eye it looked like a couple of chimpanzees grooming each other. It was hard for me not to laugh, this relates to a conversation I was having last night with my roommate and the door guy at the EARL, Duane. He was saying sometimes he looks at everyone as some type of monkey. He actually meant primate but I didn’t correct him since I got what he meant, plus he’s big. :) Anyway he was saying he’s a gibbon, my roommate said he would be a chimpanzee which Duane agreed to. They were trying to pick one for me, my roommate suggested gorilla but Duane said that I wasn’t big enough. Duane said people who hangout at the bar are baboons and my neighbor who’s always at the EARL everytime I go there (except for that night) is a spider monkey. Then something happened and the conversation was dropped. Now I’m in limbo as to which primate I resemble. Maybe I’ll get some morphing software and see what unnatural union looks best.

Sorry about that, back to Siesta Key. It was a very relaxing time, threw the football around, swam, drank beer, took pictures and chilled out. This was the first time in about two years that I’ve been to the beach so it was a much needed trip. I found tons of live sand dollars that was pretty cool, most were small but I did find one about five inches in diameter. A quick rain shower came in when I was in the water, that was pretty cool getting rained on while your in the water it was kind of a surreal experience. Tons of little water explosions all around me. I saw a few fish out there too and one jumped out of the water and hit me in the chest as its school went by. The clouds were very impressive that day, I snapped a bunch of pictures I’ll be posting them in my Tampa gallery soon.

After the beach we went to the house to shower and change, mainly because dumbass me went to Florida without a swimsuit. After cleaning up it was off to Bones a family friendly BBQ joint. They had TVs all over the place and each table had a speaker on it. You turned a knob on the speaker to switch between the different programs. Needless to say the noise pollution was plentiful. I was sitting next to Brian’s son Brian who happened to have a coloring placemat. I decided to add my own contribution to his interpretation of modern art. We only had three colors to work with, yellow, blue and green. My addition to his creation was coloring one of the logs. I colored the body blue a leaf on a branch green and the cut edge of the log yellow.

I think it looked pretty good, however I need to bring up an issue that has remained under the populace radar for far too long. The crayons they give kids at restaurants are of horrible quality. I could have colored better with candle wax. These things don’t stick to the paper at all and they are way to slick. So the next time your kid shows you something that’s splotchy and outside of the lines don’t just smile and nod and say “that’s nice honey”. Get the manager over and tell him you refuse to come back to an establishment that gives their patrons sub standard wax sticks of pleasure. What has happened in this world where everything has to be the cheapest quality possible? How about giving away nice crayons? Is that so hard? Too much money? Then don’t give any away then. What’s funny about this is kids probably don’t even care or notice, so nevermind, forget it keep giving out the crap crayons, eight year old girls in China need the work. I was talking about this to a couple of coworkers the other day one of which used to work at Rio Bravo. He said they have crap crayons too, except when they ran out and somebody would have to make a Crayola run to the drug store. Crayola, now there’s a good crayon. I wouldn’t know what periwinkle looks like if weren’t for Crayola. I remember one time in Houston we left some outside for a little while and came back to a multicolored blob. It had a very strong smell and made me nauseous. One of my brothers used to eat them too, so they’re not just for coloring.

Three times during the trip while outside smoking, an armadillo walked up. One time not more than six inches for my feet. The first two times I ran inside to get my camera but he was gone when I returned. The third time I didn’t bother which worked out since he was only there momentarily. I also saw lots of lizards, frogs and birds while I was there. No gators this time, next time I go I plan on taking pictures near Brian’s house on land that hasn’t been developed yet supposedly there’s gators there.

Sunday was laid back, we watched football, played games and drank beer. All in all it was a very relaxing trip and a much needed break. I wish I had more time but I always wish that unless I’m travelling for business.

Look for Tampa pictures soon. I have a few up there now with more to come.

Corn and Blackberries

Friday, September 24th, 2004

I’m heading to Iowa tonight and I’m actually excited. Mainly because the rest of my family is going and I get to hang out with my bros, or as they say in Hawaii my brahs. Of course “hanging out with my brahs” can mean something entirely different here in Atlanta. My Grandmother on my Dad’s side, who happens to be my only surviving grandparent is turning 75 on October 1st. My uncle is organizing a pre-birthday surprise visit from a bunch of relatives I don’t know. Last count was 38 I believe. I’ve been to Iowa once when I was a kid, I only remember corn fields and blackberry bushes though. Of course that might be all there is up there, I’ll let you know. I can’t wait to get some corn pictures, I have a couple of ideas already but unfortunately they require a ladder and my tripod which I’m not taking. I’m sure I’ll come up with something when I get there though. I don’t know if I’ll have Internet access up there, but my laptop is coming anyway to transfer pictures from my camera. If I don’t have access to the Net I might leave a couple of audblogs.

Sadly Interstate Bakeries has filed for Chapter 11. This means we may see an end of everybody’s favorite phallically shaped snack food the Twinkie. I don’t even like Twinkies but it is a symbol of Americana, what better represents our culture of capitalism, laziness and preoccupation with all things sexual? (ok, that last ones not too bad) Alright maybe I’m being a little harsh, it’s strange to think that years down the road no one will no what a Twinkie was. It seems to be so universal now. No matter where I move everyone knows about Twinkies. It’s like when you meet someone new you might get into a music discussion: Do you like Husker Du? Husker Who? How about the Minutemen? Isn’t that some kind of militia? Ok, what about Soul Coughing? What the hell are you talking about? You like Twinkies? Yeah man, they’re excellent! Without this commonalty between different geographical regions and social classes we will start to see the further degradation of our consumer based celebrity obsessed culture. The pothead factor also needs to be considered. Everyone knows the knockoff Twinkies aren’t up to par, I guess they could go to Ho-Hos if they like chocolate. Wait a minute, Interstate Bakeries makes those too! We are definitely looking at a crisis of untold proportions here. I recommend we raise the National Terror Alert Level to Ernie now, hell maybe even Elmo! Screw Iraq we need to get this situation under control before it gets out of hand.

Soon to be munching on Twinkies in a corn field…

True Love

Friday, September 24th, 2004

Picked up True Love by Toots and the Maytals yesterday. This is a compilation CD between Toots and other music legends like Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Bootsy Collins and many more. See this link for the full list. Toots of course is a reggae legend. I’m embarrassed to say this is the first of his CDs I have purchased, you got to start somewhere though. I found out about this CD from Radio Paradise a month or two ago. They were playing “Still is Still Moving to Me”, I couldn’t believe Willie Nelson was singing reggae and it was sounded good! The CD went on my wish list and into my hands yesterday. This CD was made to turn people onto Toots who normally might not be exposed to him. It worked on me, to be honest though I was wanting to buy one of his traditional CDs instead but Best Buy didn’t have any. That’s ok though because this CD was a great buy. I was starting write what my favorite tracks were but it was too hard to pick, they are all great in my opinion. So if you like reggae pick it up, if you don’t like reggae pick it up, even if you don’t like music pick it up and give it to someone who does.

PS Check out Rachael Yamagata’s voice on “Blame on Me”, man talk about sexy!

I also bought Good News For People Who Love Bad News by Modest Mouse yesterday. I’ve only listened to it once as opposed to three times for Toots, so I’m not ready to review it yet. My first impression is good though, of course “Float On” kicks ass.

Critiques and bongos

Thursday, September 23rd, 2004

I went to my second Digital 102 class last night. The class started off with a critique. I brought some of my East Atlanta Strut shots for the critique and everybody liked them. The instructor even said I have a “good eye”. I’ve been waiting a while for someone to say that, it’s a very big confidence booster. I’ve been getting a lot of compliments on my recent shots, I think I’m finally starting to make some progress. I want to get to the point of being completely confident in my abilities as a photographer. I hit that years ago as it relates to computer knowledge. It will be nice once I get there for photography. Don’t get me wrong I still like it when someone says I’m good with computers or is impressed with something that I do. It’s just that I don’t need that to know I’m good (man, I’m sounding like an arrogant dick here). Of course there is always more to learn (bad cliche’). Especially with computers and there will always be someone who knows more (another bad cliche’). I like where I’m at though. Photography though, is something I really love. People that know me are aware I jump around to a lot of different interests. Dropping most of them after an intense short-term interest but I’ve stuck with photography for quite a while. I have put it down here or there but I always come back to it. The technical aspect is part of the reason it attracts me, it satisfies my geekish tendencies, especially now that I’ve gone digital. But the main reason I’m drawn to it is to create something unique. Since I don’t program, my computer escapades don’t fulfill that need. Building a computer or fixing a problem doesn’t give me much satisfaction. However when I look at one of my photos and think “wow I took that” or someone says nice photo, it make me glad to be alive.

Now switching gears (damn, another bad one), after class I went to the EARL (surprise) to see & hear Dub is a Weapon and Elemental Harmonics. I ended up going by myself. The strange thing is I don’t mind going out by myself when I’m out of town. I almost always have a good time and meet interesting people. When I’m home though I usually don’t, it tends to make me uncomfortable. I don’t know what the difference is, maybe because I don’t have a choice out of town. Well whatever it is I want to start breaking the habit, there have been numerous times I didn’t do something because I failed to recruit anyone and I’m sure I’ve missed out on some good times. As I was waiting for the show to start I wanted a cigarette bad. Part of it was the nicotine calling me but mostly because it would have given me something to do. For some reason I feel better hanging out by myself with a cigarette then without one. It’s like I’m not here alone, see I’ve got my little friend ciggy with me. I held out though, when I pulled up in my driveway after the show I did light one up but tossed it down after taking a quarter drag. It tasted like shit, it was one of my backup packs thankfully. If it were a Dunhill I might have smoked it.

Ok, back to the show. Elemental Harmonics is an electronica Atlanta band that has a little dub mixed in. Really good chill out music. Dub is a Weapon is a dub (no, really?) band from Brooklyn NY. They put on a good show, their bongo player Larry McDonald was phenomenal! He used one drum and it sounded like two or more. Occasionally they put echo effects on it and it was really crazy then. I’m no bongo expert but he is definitely the best bongo player I have ever seen. I did a quick search on Google this morning and found out he has played with Bob Marley, Toots Hibbert, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, the Skatalites, Gil Scott-Heron, Taj Mahal and Shemekia Copeland. After the show I went to tell him how good he was (as if he didn’t know) and I said something to the effect of “dude you kicked ass!” which is just like saying “hi, I’m a dumbass and can’t think of anything to say to you so You Rock Man!!!!! whooo!!!!”. I think he appreciated the comment though. I didn’t have a lot of beer only three or four I think, I did do a shot though and I’m paying for it today. I just can’t drink like I used to anymore. That’s four cliches in one post! Actually I never drank a ton but I could hold my own.

I promise no cliches in the next post…

I’m now offically a redneck

Tuesday, September 21st, 2004

I admit it, I bought a beer bottle koozie. Secretly I’ve wanted one for a while but the stigma (is there a stigma or is it all in my head) of it has always held me back. I finally broke down and bought one the other day. It is an Atlanta Falcons design not one of the “I’d rather be fishing” or some other redneckish saying. Ok, I know that doesn’t make it any better but humor me a bit. It does have a functional use though, I tend to drink beer slowly at home so it does help to keep the beer cold. That’s my excuse take it or leave it. I guess it’s not that bad, if I start putting confederate flag stickers on my car then I’ll have a problem.

I just stopped smoking again (about two hours ago). I started when I was about nineteen after a bad break up and continued for a few years. I stopped for the past three or four but picked it up again when I was in Vegas back in May. I really liked being a nonsmoker I saved a lot of money, I didn’t smell, no abnormal running out of breath, no jonesing for a smoke during a movie or flight. Smoking has it’s benefits though, well maybe not benefits but positives of a bad habit. If you’re really stressed out it cuts the edge and it does give you a buzz. Of course that goes away once you’re hooked, you just get antsy when you don’t have one for a while. Actually antsy is to week of a word, you turn into an ass if you don’t have one for a while. Then there is the “cool” factor or “bad boy” aspect, at least that’s what Hollywood shoves down our throats and I think a lot of people buy into it, including myself at times. Now i’m down to one vice, alcohol. Let’s see if I can keep it that way.

going to be coughing for a few days

Do Ewoks eat toast?

Monday, September 20th, 2004

Today at lunch some coworkers and myself got into a discussion about Ewoks. Later on I was wondering if Ewoks eat toast. I’m pretty sure they don’t make bread but would they eat it if it was offered to them? Perhaps with a little butter? I can picture them nibbling on it, probably the same way a chipmunk (did you know there are 23 species of chipmunk? I had no idea) eats. If you have any information on the subject I would appreciate it.

In case you were wondering Gremlins would beat Ewoks in a grudge match.

yes I’m weird sometimes…
