Petition to Protect Poultry under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act

They are slaughtered by the billions each year in the United States, but the federal law that protects animals raised and killed for human consumption does not cover them. Chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese, animals that are widely consumed in the U.S. today are not afforded the protection of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. The federal law, which was enacted over fifty years ago, requires that animals be rendered “insensible to pain” prior to slaughter. A small price to pay one would think, and one which the American public supports in the name of animal welfare. Indeed, with increasing coverage of the cruelties endured by farm animals raised in intensive confinement systems across the country, the need to slaughter them humanely becomes all that more compelling.

With your support, we can help provide this protection to these 9 billion animals each year. The ASPCA has joined forces with the Humane Society of the United States and other animal protection organizations to reach this objective. We are hoping to gather at least 25,000 signatures to the “Petition for Poultry” by Thanksgiving. The petition will be presented to Congress urging passage of a law to amend the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act to include poultry.
