I heard a great commentary on NPR yesterday by an ex Naval History teacher at the Citadel. It’s an interesting take on the strengths and weakness of American society. He also mentions how we do not have a strong history or at least not as long as most other nations or cultures, which is a discussion I’ve had numerous times with my friends. I also believe this is the cause of lot of our obsession with consumerism and people’s tendency to dismiss conservation. Since we do not have a strong culture to hold us up we have latched onto Capitalism as a substitute. This has allowed us to become the number one superpower of the world but at what cost? And how long can we hold onto that position?

Actually the title should be “Sensible Politician?”, I just wanted to get a dig in. A few weeks ago I was listening to the Commonwealth Club’s radio broadcast. The speaker for this particular show was Christine Todd Whitman. Normally I would have switched the channel but since I was in Alabama (don’t ask) my only other choices were country and religious stations. What I heard completely shocked me. She had very valid viewpoints and (gasp) I was actually agreeing with what she was saying. To paraphrase she thinks the Republican Party has been hijacked by “Social Fundamentalists” and only represent a small percentage of conservatives out there. I won’t recount the whole speech but I recommend hearing it for yourself.

I saw Incident at Ogala a few day ago. This movie was a real eye opener, it’s absolutely disgusting to see what our government did to Lenord Peltier. It shocked me to see how our justice system can function. I highly recommend watching this, it’s time we get our heads out of the sand. Speaking of our justice system, Frontline did an excellent program on plea bargains last year. You can watch it here: The Plea
