I’m gonna take me that south-bound, all the way to Georgia now

A couple of weeks ago while at a Patterson Hood show, I made up my mind to move back to Georgia. This is something I’ve been thinking about for awhile. In fact almost as soon as I arrived here. I just can’t deal with the people here, or the winters with no sun, or the seven to one single male to single female ratio. Plus I have lots of friends in Atlanta and I’ve lived there longer than anywhere else in my life. And as Anaïs said to me, “You have family here.” not in the blood sense but in every other way. At the end of October it will be a year since I’ve moved here, numerous people here have told me how people hate Seattle the first year but grow to love it by the second. That may be true but I figure why wait for something that might or might not happen when I know Atlanta will be a sure thing. True there are many things I don’t like about Atlanta but then again Seattle didn’t deliver on those shortcomings. I still think this is a great place to visit and I have made some good friends here but the time has come to move on.

Current Tampa rundown

, , , , ,

Red (unpleasant)

  • Long ass plane ride with a two hour layover
  • Good friends from Atlanta couldn’t make it
  • Had two toes smashed with a football (walking funnier than usual now)
  • Missed Flaming Lips show (will see them at Bonnaroo)

Blue (pleasant)

  • Good friends live here
  • Good friends from Connecticut came down
  • Beach (yes a real beach with sand not rocks)
  • Throwing a football around (with others)
  • Sunlight (I had forgotten that it exists)
  • Warm (a strange sensation, especially without rain)
  • Shoulder workout (at the gym, get your mind out of the gutter)
  • Better women to men ratio
  • Aforementioned women scantily clad (yes I’m a pig but I have positive qualities too)
  • Multiple tattoo compliments (to be fair I get these in Seattle too)

So Blue is winning by a wide margin and I do not see any possibility of Red pulling it off.

Ok about the whole Seattle thing. I have neither the patience nor desire to spout out a long version of this. So here is the condensed Golden Book version for those of the Republican persuasion.

Actually I like Golden Books, used to at least. I should read some now and make sure they aren’t Nazi propaganda material.

Anyway back to the point. I’ll call this the Short and incomplete version of events because someone, whom shall remain nameless was to lazy to blog about them in a timely fashion as the forthnamed events occurred.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the introduction out of the way, on to the center of the Tootsie pop. Have you ever heard about the free tootsie pop story? In the past supposedly if you got a wrapper with an Indian shooting a star on it, you could turn it in for a free tootsie pop. I was never sure about this story, especially because almost every wrapper I got had the aforementioned Indian on it. Of course they could have printed more after they stopped the promotion. Or it could of just been an urban legend. I suppose I could Google it but I kind of like not knowing something in this time of immediate reference gratification. In some ways it’s great but then I also tend to spend large amounts of time looking up random useless crap just because I can.

Ok I’m done with the tangents now. On to the point of this post.

My time in Seattle started on October 2nd. I wanted to leave Atlanta for multiple reasons. I was tired of all the traffic, republicans, the rat race mentality, overbearing summers, friends moving away, the city council and mayor killing bars and restaurants but most of all it was wanderlust. I moved around a lot growing up and I won’t lie to you, it sucked. Always being the new kid (on the block) and having to fight to establish myself. Having to make new friends and acclimate to a new school. A byproduct of all this moving around is my boredom of a location after awhile.

Cue melting screen while gentle harp music plays……

I originally moved to Atlanta in late ‘96. Eddie a really good friend of mine had moved there from my previous city of Charlotte. I had visited him during the Olympics and was wowed by the plethora of nightlife and women. I was also told the ratio of women to men was 4:1, add to that the large gay population it made it even better. Of course that was probably bullshit but it convinced my horny nineteen year old mind. The kicker however was the job market. This was during the Tech Boom and Atlanta was hot (insert chessey Hotlanta joke here). Atlanta’s high tech want ads were as large as a small phonebook. Conversely Charlotte’s were composed of a just a couple of pages. Off I went to the phoenix and received two jobs offers my first couple of days there. I accepted the second one because Eddie worked there. Things were great for awhile, lots of parties and work was fun (gasp). But alas all good things….. Some of my good friends moved away, I fell (actually jumped headlong) into drug abuse and ended up quitting my job. I’ll save the specifics for another blog but eventually I was getting close to scraping the metaphorical bottom. Somehow I managed to crawl out of the pit of my own creation and started to put my life back on track. Once again I was a respectable member of society and hated every minute of it. With fewer good friends, disillusionment with life, my fellow man and even computers I knew it was time for a change. Previously I passed up on a possible move to San Diego and negotiations fell apart on a transfer to Ft. Lauderdale with another company. I probably could have went to Tampa as well. Finally I was at the point where I was tired of stagnating in my personal and professional life. After visiting Boston and Chicago as possible candidates, Seattle was decided upon. I was with my ex at the time (yes I’m single now, control yourself ladies) and she vetoed Austin which was also in the running for me. Looking at things now I might have been better off in Austin but I’m willing to give Seattle a chance. So Seattle it is and has been for the past couple of months.

End under-dramatic flashback sequence…..

This post has already run on much longer than I intended so Seattle details will have to wait. In the meantime you can read some of my Yelp reviews. Incidentally *self plug alert* I am now a member of the Elite squad. If you read this on Atlanta Bloggers I will be removed soon. Have no fear though, you can still read me via my Feedburner feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/AlexVernon or on AlexVernon.com of course.

Ok kiddies that’s it for this post, be cool and stop stealing your grandmother’s pills.

I’m off to see the wizard

At the end of the month I’m moving to the Emerald City aka Seattle. If you’ve been watching my del.icio.us links you probably figured as much. I’ve been planning on moving for quite some time but I haven’t blogged about it until now since people I work with read my blog. I visited Boston and Chicago, both of which were in the running but settled on Seattle. Less traffic, fewer strip malls, more progressives, better art and music scene, cooler temperatures and quick access to snow and the ocean were a few of my reasons for choosing Seattle. Of course you do have crappy weather eight months out of the year but I think the tradeoffs are worth it. Washington will be the fifth state (see map below) I’ve lived in during my twenty-nine years on this planet. My last day at work is the 31st and I should be leaving on the first or second of September. Now I just need some money, a job and a place to live and I’ll be set.

My route so far.

A. Houston, TX to Charlotte, NC

B. Charlotte, NC to Austin, TX

C. Austin, TX to Clayton, CA

D. Clayton, CA to Charlotte, NC

E. Charlotte, NC to Atlanta, GA

F. Atlanta, GA to Seattle, WA

As you may or may not have noticed I have switched to WordPress from MovableType like some other bloggers have done. Mainly because of all the comment and trackback spam, plus I wanted to use a blogging package licensed under the GPL. I also upgraded my Gallery software and put a new Twelfth Planet gallery on my site. It is located here. I also posted one new abstract photo here. About the only thing I haven’t been doing is blogging. And that’s not going to change, at least until next Wednesday. I’m headed to the Bahamas tomorrow morning. This is the first time I’ll be leaving the country if you don’t count my multiple trips to Tijuana (which I don’t). I promise to have an update when I get back and lots of photos.

Vegas trip wrap up

Thursday, March 3rd, 2005

The Good:

Kip and Jolene got married
Hanging out with friends and my cousin
Seeing a casino loaded with Santas!!!
Wearing my smoking Mickey shirt and watching people’s reactions
Lots of exercise from stair running and walking
Having a hot married woman flirt with me (she started the conversation)

The Bad:

The hotel did not have a record of my reservation from Travelocity (second time this has happened to me)
Down $94 (not counting trip cost, food and alcohol)
Negating all the exercise I did by drinking so much
Hanging out in lame clubs
Dead Kennedys show being cancelled
I got sick on the last day which made travelling all the more miserable

The Ugly:

Nothing, there is beauty in all things (even in Vegas)

Verdict:

It was a great trip and I had more fun than I expected.

I’m still in Vegas at the moment. I know I said I wouldn’t be updating my blog but I had to bring my laptop to do some work on Friday night since I procrastinated. It’s been fun time, I don’t really like Vegas but it’s cool to hang out with friends. The best part of the trip so far is the Santa Claus convention that’s going on. There were around thirty Santas walking around the casino floor yesterday. I think it’s the coolest thing ever but my friends don’t seem to be as impressed. I posted some photos to my Flickr account if you want to take a look. Yes I now have a Flickr account, I was going to blog about it but never got around to it until now. I should also mention my personal gallery is back up somewhat. I still need to upload some more photos and edit captions. Back to Vegas, I wanted to see the Dead Kennedys yesterday at the House of Blues but unfortunately the show was cancelled. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is playing there tonight, so I’m going to try to make that one. Time to get ready for the wedding, of course I came unprepared so I had to buy a shirt, tie and belt this morning. Now I have to iron (which takes me forever) and see if I can remember how to tie a double Windsor. More interesting content to come (hopefully).

I’ll be in Vegas until Monday so I won’t be updating this. I might make a couple of audio posts though.

Tampa trip review

Friday, September 24th, 2004

Shit, my flight to Des Moines is on a Delta Connection jet. It’s hard enough to squeeze in the seat on the bigger planes, this is going to be fun. I did get an exit row seat though, unfortunately since the plane is so small I’ll probably have someone sitting next to me. Anyway I have an hour and a half to kill so I figured I would write a review of my Tampa trip before I completely forget what happened.

I was there from September 9th through the 13th. I’ve been to Tampa three times before. A couple of them were like one or two day trips though. This trip was purely a personal one. I went to visit my friends Brian, Lori and Brian. I was also hoping to see my friend Steve his new wife Summer and daughter Reba. Unfortunately it didn’t workout this time. I know I’ll be going back though, especially since Brian’s getting a pool and hot tub put in. (I mean to visit my friends again of course.)

Brian picked me up at the airport and after playing musical cars we headed to Hooters for a beer and wings. I never go to Hooters except when I’m out of town hanging out with friends. I don’t really like their food and I have an ex-psycho girlfriend that used to work there (before I dated her) so it brings back bad memories. The wings were actually good this time though although not hot at all. Plus they had Bass on tap so of course we had to get a pitcher. I think we just hung around the house the rest of that night. Hey give me a break it was two weeks ago, my brain can only hold so much. Isn’t weird how you remember some things and not others? In this instance for example I can’t really remember what we did that night but I remember things from years ago on “non events” from work at the beginning of the year. Of course the beer I drank that night is probably playing a role in this case.

On Saturday we hung out around the house, played some games and Brian changed the wheels on his car. He was showed me Doom3 one night. That is one scary game! Play it at night with all the lights turned off and try not to jump. I used to be a total Doom junkie when the first one came out in ‘93 or ‘94 I believe. I was in Charlotte at the time and some friends and I would have LAN parties before anyone new what a LAN party was. I remember getting hassled by a cop at least once for having a computer in my back seat after getting pulled over for speeding. One of my friends broke his desk by jerking his knee after getting scared by the game.

Back to the trip, that night we went to see Deborah Coleman at WMNF’s 10th birthday party. I’ve seen Deborah twice before, once at The Blind Willie McTell Blues Festival and once at a defunct blues club in Old Towne Conyers. Deborah is a real treat to see, she really shreds on the guitar. Not some girly guitar either she uses a full-size Les Paul with a fat neck. She is hands down the best female guitarist I have ever seen, and better than 98% of the men I’ve seen. We showed up a little late so we only got to hear about four songs. I would’ve went if she was only playing one song though. Dave Alvin was headlining, that was a buzzkill after hearing Deborah so we left after giving him a chance by suffering through a couple of songs. This actually worked out great because I was originally going to see Deborah at The Harvest Moon Bluesfest which I’m going to miss now since I decided to go to the Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans during that same weekend. After the show we stopped at a bar closed it went back to the house and stayed up to some ungodly hour.

On Saturday we went to Siesta Key Beach which was about 45 minutes away from their house. Siesta Key is a beautiful beach with white sand the consistency of powdered sugar. I had a great time that day.

I must interrupt this blog for a minute. There is a young couple sitting next to me at the gate bench. I guess the guy isn’t not feeling well because he is sitting on the ground in front of the girl. Earlier she was massaging his head but a minute ago she was touching his head in a petting motion. Out of the corner of my eye it looked like a couple of chimpanzees grooming each other. It was hard for me not to laugh, this relates to a conversation I was having last night with my roommate and the door guy at the EARL, Duane. He was saying sometimes he looks at everyone as some type of monkey. He actually meant primate but I didn’t correct him since I got what he meant, plus he’s big. :) Anyway he was saying he’s a gibbon, my roommate said he would be a chimpanzee which Duane agreed to. They were trying to pick one for me, my roommate suggested gorilla but Duane said that I wasn’t big enough. Duane said people who hangout at the bar are baboons and my neighbor who’s always at the EARL everytime I go there (except for that night) is a spider monkey. Then something happened and the conversation was dropped. Now I’m in limbo as to which primate I resemble. Maybe I’ll get some morphing software and see what unnatural union looks best.

Sorry about that, back to Siesta Key. It was a very relaxing time, threw the football around, swam, drank beer, took pictures and chilled out. This was the first time in about two years that I’ve been to the beach so it was a much needed trip. I found tons of live sand dollars that was pretty cool, most were small but I did find one about five inches in diameter. A quick rain shower came in when I was in the water, that was pretty cool getting rained on while your in the water it was kind of a surreal experience. Tons of little water explosions all around me. I saw a few fish out there too and one jumped out of the water and hit me in the chest as its school went by. The clouds were very impressive that day, I snapped a bunch of pictures I’ll be posting them in my Tampa gallery soon.

After the beach we went to the house to shower and change, mainly because dumbass me went to Florida without a swimsuit. After cleaning up it was off to Bones a family friendly BBQ joint. They had TVs all over the place and each table had a speaker on it. You turned a knob on the speaker to switch between the different programs. Needless to say the noise pollution was plentiful. I was sitting next to Brian’s son Brian who happened to have a coloring placemat. I decided to add my own contribution to his interpretation of modern art. We only had three colors to work with, yellow, blue and green. My addition to his creation was coloring one of the logs. I colored the body blue a leaf on a branch green and the cut edge of the log yellow.

I think it looked pretty good, however I need to bring up an issue that has remained under the populace radar for far too long. The crayons they give kids at restaurants are of horrible quality. I could have colored better with candle wax. These things don’t stick to the paper at all and they are way to slick. So the next time your kid shows you something that’s splotchy and outside of the lines don’t just smile and nod and say “that’s nice honey”. Get the manager over and tell him you refuse to come back to an establishment that gives their patrons sub standard wax sticks of pleasure. What has happened in this world where everything has to be the cheapest quality possible? How about giving away nice crayons? Is that so hard? Too much money? Then don’t give any away then. What’s funny about this is kids probably don’t even care or notice, so nevermind, forget it keep giving out the crap crayons, eight year old girls in China need the work. I was talking about this to a couple of coworkers the other day one of which used to work at Rio Bravo. He said they have crap crayons too, except when they ran out and somebody would have to make a Crayola run to the drug store. Crayola, now there’s a good crayon. I wouldn’t know what periwinkle looks like if weren’t for Crayola. I remember one time in Houston we left some outside for a little while and came back to a multicolored blob. It had a very strong smell and made me nauseous. One of my brothers used to eat them too, so they’re not just for coloring.

Three times during the trip while outside smoking, an armadillo walked up. One time not more than six inches for my feet. The first two times I ran inside to get my camera but he was gone when I returned. The third time I didn’t bother which worked out since he was only there momentarily. I also saw lots of lizards, frogs and birds while I was there. No gators this time, next time I go I plan on taking pictures near Brian’s house on land that hasn’t been developed yet supposedly there’s gators there.

Sunday was laid back, we watched football, played games and drank beer. All in all it was a very relaxing trip and a much needed break. I wish I had more time but I always wish that unless I’m travelling for business.

Look for Tampa pictures soon. I have a few up there now with more to come.
