A couple of weeks ago while at a Patterson Hood show, I made up my mind to move back to Georgia. This is something I’ve been thinking about for awhile. In fact almost as soon as I arrived here. I just can’t deal with the people here, or the winters with no sun, or the seven to one single male to single female ratio. Plus I have lots of friends in Atlanta and I’ve lived there longer than anywhere else in my life. And as Anaïs said to me, “You have family here.” not in the blood sense but in every other way. At the end of October it will be a year since I’ve moved here, numerous people here have told me how people hate Seattle the first year but grow to love it by the second. That may be true but I figure why wait for something that might or might not happen when I know Atlanta will be a sure thing. True there are many things I don’t like about Atlanta but then again Seattle didn’t deliver on those shortcomings. I still think this is a great place to visit and I have made some good friends here but the time has come to move on.

Stopped smoking again a couple days ago. Hopefully it will stick this time, I haven’t been drinking either but I’m going to tonight. I need something to cut the edge and I think I can without smoking. More on this later….
Stolen burritos are great but they’re even better when someone else steals them for you.
Reggae, women, free beer, Dunhills, Rachel = kick ass night!

Finished my second event poster recently. I can’t wait for the event, should be awesome.

I just finished my first event poster. Of course I’m a photographer not a graphic artist but I do know how to use Photoshop. This was a rush job and pro bono so considering those factors I think I did a decent job.

Yesterday I decided to stop smoking. I have made a decision for my life (which I will blog about soon) and smoking can stop me from realizing it. Of course anything can but smoking increases the odds of nonrealization. I’m using the gum this time and it seems to be working ok. Of course it’s only been one day but I believe I am much more resolved than quit attempts in the past. This morning, ok this afternoon, I stayed up late watching Masterpiece Theartre: Sally Lockhart: The Ruby in the Smoke. This is actually the second Masterpiece Theatre program I have enjoyed. Plus this starred Billie Piper, whom I’ve had a thing for since the first season of the new Doctor Who. Back to the shower, I’m doing my thing just like every day but when I finish shampooing my hair something goes wrong. I suddenly smell a slightly medicinal odor. My first reaction was “What the fuck!” I assumed something was coming out of the pipes. Then I wondered if someone put something in my shampoo. Well I’m not a spy (or am I?) and my roommates would never do anything like that. Then the answer dawned on me. I was smelling my Tea Tree shampoo. The humid shower must have cleared out my nose and since I haven’t been smoking I can now smell again. Of course I could smell before but as any smoker or exsmoker knows, it drastically reduces that sense. It may sound silly but I think this will be the main reason I remain a nonsmoker. Yes it’s nice to have a reduced cancer chance, better lung capacity and more money but I feel not being able to smell really diminishes a lot of experiences in life. True, it would be nice not to smell walking down Bourbon Street or Revolution Ave in Tijuana. However even repulsive smells give us memories and make this life more enjoyable. Or at least make the better smells that much more appreciated.
Yesterday after spending seven hours at PCNW developing, making contact sheets and going to class I got to make my first print from a negative. I am having a lot of fun with this class. Even though I already know all the basics like exposure, using shutter speeds and aperture etc., the whole developing and printing process is new to me. Yes, Photoshop is much more powerful but there is something special about traditional printing. As one of my fellow students said “It has a magical quality about it.”. I especially enjoy the hands on aspect, it’s more satisfying to me than computer manipulation. That being said I’m not giving up digital since it has many advantages, however my film camera well get much more action in the future. It was starting to resent me from sitting in the bag for a few years.
What was the picture? A bunch of rocks that my roommate made a walkway with. Doesn’t sound like much but I think it’s pretty cool. Once I buy a scanner or find someone that has one I’ll post it.
I started my first tattoo yesterday at Slave to the Needle. Five hours under the needle, with another five coming in March. I decided to go out out for my first one and do a half-sleeve. I have wanted a tattoo for years but could never make up my mind on what I wanted. I finally decided on a dragon, a longhorn skull, fire and water. A dragon with fire because I was born in the year of the Fire Dragon (as was Bruce Lee, but I don’t have his moves). I chose to have a medieval dragon because of my European heritage. Water because I am an Aquarius and a longhorn skull because I’m a Texan. I left it up to the artist John Fitzgerald to figure out how to put it all together. The night before my appointment I was wondering how the dragon and the skull would work together. The dragon could hold it but then the skull would be small, I also thought it might be cool to have the dragon wearing a longhorn helmet. When I showed up John showed me what he had come up with. He had two bad ass drawings, one of a dragon and one of the skull. Since I’m not The Governator we were having issues with fitting both on my arm. I even suggested that I could save one for the other arm but he wanted to make it work and I’m glad he did. After cutting the drawings he looked at them for a minute, then placed the longhorn skull on top of the dragon head. It hit both of us at the same time, “that’s it” we said. As I mentioned earlier, I had thought of something similar the night before but had not mentioned it to John, a little bit of synchronicity I suppose. So that problem was solved and as a nice bonus I got something more unique than just a dragon. After the dragon, skull and water stencils were laid he encountered another obstacle, where to put the fire. Again I suggested I can wait until the other arm but he wanted to make it work. Fortunately for me he didn’t immediately agree with my other arm suggestions because I think it made the tattoo much better. Fast forward five painful hours and now I’m halfway through with the tattoo. I am extremely satisfied with the results so far and I can’t wait until it’s finished. He even said to a fellow artist that it was one of his favorite pieces. \m/ I will post a couple of pics in the next day or so.
For those in the Puget Sound area I highly recommend John. Not only is he an excellent artist (and I can’t stress that enough) he is a very cool guy as well. He even bought me a couple pieces of pizza halfway through the session. Click on his name above for a link to his portfolio.
